Going green with renewable energy
Singapore accounts for 60% of the region’s (SEA) data centre capacity. In addition, the costs of operating data centres, especially as the scale of operations increases, is very high and this has led to significant use of non-renewable energy sources as well as release of carbon emissions into our environment.
At Pro-Matrix, we hope to mitigate our negative impact on the environment. We hope to build a credible renewable energy plan and move towards the use of renewable energy. In Singapore, there is an increasing drive towards the use of solar energy. Thus, data centers, which require a colossal amount of energy to power should seek to use such technology. The potential installation and use of solar panels in our data center solutions are in the works and we hope to implement them in the near future.
Solar power is the addition of energy to the grid instead of using simple credits to consume existing capacity. With solar power driving the operation of data centers, we hope to take it one step further. We plan to interconnect it with the grid so any excess energy can be sold back. This reduces carbon emissions in the community in the generating of electricity.
Such solutions to reducing climate change are not easy. Due to limited land space in Singapore compared to the scale of solar panels, it has proven difficult to find adequate space to house the solar panels. For example, for a typical greenfield data center, we can cover the roof with solar panels, but the power generated would only be able to cover 1% of the building’s energy load. Hence, we are looking at alternatives such as off-site utility scale renewable solutions as we strive to develop a reliable renewable energy plan in the drive towards technological advancement and environmental sustainability
Implementation of tropical data centres
Through the move towards the implementation of tropical data centres (TDC), we seek to reduce energy consumption of data centres. This move is in line with the drive towards greener data centre technologies as part of Singapore’s Smart Nation drive.
A tropical data centre is a data centre able to feasibly operate and function optimally in a tropical environment which entails temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius and ambient humidity up to or exceeding 90 percent.
TDCs could significantly reduce global energy consumption by data centres with higher operating temperatures and humidity levels. This is because data centres are currently cooled to between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and kept to within 50 to 60 percent relative ambient humidity for safety. If TDCs can be implemented, lesser energy will be utilised to cool the digital infrastructure and maintain the relative ambient humidity which could reduce energy costs by up to 40 percent, and reduce carbon emissions.
This move towards TDC falls under the Green Data Centre Programme (GDCP) which aims to boost overall data centre energy efficiency through innovation with insignificant impact on the critical data centre operations for sustainable computing. This highlights our commitment to protecting the environment and simultaneously enhance our competitiveness.
Regionalisation – A ‘World-Class’ Data Centre service provider
As businesses all around the world become increasingly globalized, it is only a matter of time before regionalization becomes a necessary step to compete on even grounds with other firms, be it foreign or local.
Internet usage in Southeast Asia (SEA) continues to multiply, with millions of new users in 2020. As such, SEA serves as a critical business roadmap not only for expansion but also for diversification. The region is projected to achieve accelerated growth in the market as more companies are choosing to develop data centres in SEA.
Asia-Pacific as a whole, is on track to lead the data centre market by 2021. This arises due to the increasing demand for Data Centres especially from the younger demographic in the emerging economies around SEA providing an opportunity that we are capitalizing on to expand. Hence, the greater need for an improved IT infrastructure is driven by the potential for rapid digital economic growth.
The ever-increasing development of data centres in Indonesia is a testament to the improved IT ecosystem. With enhanced digital infrastructure, companies can depend on reliable and stable data access and ramp up their service delivery. In 2016, Pro-Matrix expanded into Jakarta, Indonesia, establishing a representative office and subsidiary firm to provide a full suite of solutions in line with our Design, Build, Operate framework. As we focus on the vast growth potential available, we intend to carve out and capitalise on foreign markets to aid your digital transformation while achieving healthy growth in the foreseeable future.
